What will happen at my appointment?

A geneticist discussing a report with a patient

When you arrive at the genetics department, your details will be taken by our reception staff. You will be asked to wait in the waiting room. There is a play area for children.

Genetics appointments are usually either with a genetic doctor (Geneticist) or Genetic Counsellor or occasionally both together. An appointment in the metabolic team may involve specialist Paediatricians, Nurses and Dieticians. Multidisciplinary clinics will include doctors from other clinical specialties, such as Renal Physicians or Ophthalmologists. The clinicians you meet in clinic will introduce themselves, but if you are unclear, please feel free to ask.

The appointments usually last for about 30-45 minutes.

If you need an interpreter, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can arrange this for you.

It can helpful to bring as much information as you can about the family, particularly about family members with a similar condition. Please see our leaflet to help you prepare for your appointment.
