Qualified and registered speech and language therapists work within the NF2 MDT and deliver the service in accordance with their professional body the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Our speech and language therapists provide assessment, advice, and management for individuals experiencing changes to their voice, swallow, speech or communication secondary to NF2.
Individuals can self-refer themselves to the NF2 SLT service, or can be referred in by other members of the team.
Appointments may either happen face to face or virtually, to support your needs/ preferences.
Initially we will have a relaxed discussion to find out what your concerns are. Your NF2 SLT will have already access your medical records.
Depending on the reported concerns we will then complete an assessment, this may include:
- Oromotor assessment (seeing how the muscles in your face and mouth move)
- Swallowing assessment. The SLT may gently touch the muscles under your chin or listen to your swallow sounds with a stethoscope.
- Nasoendoscopy (a small scope which goes up your nose and rests at the back of your throat)
- Videofluoroscopy (an x-ray of your swallowing)
- Speech sounds assessment
- Language assessment
Your SLT will either feedback to you straight away, or analyse the results and contact you a few days later
