Reporting Times

All reporting times are from sample receipt at the laboratory. For detailed information see the relevant service profile.

Biochemical Genetics

Reports are issued without delay, usually within 24 hours of results being obtained.
Telephone results are followed by written results within 24 hours.

Cytogenetics

Prenatal samples (rapid aneuploidy screening)

2-3 working days if received up to 2.00pm.

3-5 working days if received after 2.00pm.

Preliminary telephone results for exclusion of aneuploidy are normally available within 2 working days.

Prenatal samples (amniotic fluid and CVS)

10 days average, dependent of rate of cell growth.

Prenatal samples (direct CVS preparations)

Normally 2-5 days when the result is abnormal and concurs with abnormal ultrasound
findings. Results from direct CVS preparations should never be considered definitive.

Prenatal samples (fetal blood)

4-5 working days.

Prenatal FISH Tests

Results reported simultaneously with routine cytogenetic studies.

Postnatal urgent blood samples

10 days.

Postnatal routine blood samples
28 days.

Postnatal solid tissue samples

28 days, dependent of rate of cell growth.

14 days for unsuccessful cell cultures.

Molecular Genetics

Prenatal diagnosis

3 working days.

Testing for known mutations / non-urgent samples

10 working days.

Testing for unknown mutations (e.g., mutation scanning, linkage analysis)

40 working days.
