Molecular Genetics

Background
Molecular genetics is the study of the molecular structure and
function of genes. The North-West Molecular Genetics Laboratory
provides DNA-based genetic testing for the diagnosis and carrier
detection of a number of diseases including cystic fibrosis,
muscular dystrophy and some inherited forms of cancer.
Our investigative methods include directly sequencing the DNA
from patients. This laboratory has been instrumental in the
development and application of new DNA diagnostic tests; examples
include neurofibromatosis type 2 (a rare type of cancer) and
congenital adrenal hyperplasia (a hormonal imbalance).
The laboratory combines state-of-the art equipment and
procedures with a nationally recognized expertise to provide
genetic testing for patients throughout north-west England and
beyond.
If a required molecular genetic test is not available from the
laboratory we can arrange sample processing and export for testing
in an external laboratory, and in this case the referral centre
will be invoiced for the work. If this service is required, please
submit a completed export form with the relevant
samples.
