Cytogenetics

Background
Cytogenetics involves the study of human chromosomes in health
and disease. Chromosome studies are an important laboratory
diagnostic procedure in prenatal diagnosis, in certain patients
with mental retardation and multiple birth defects, in patients
with abnormal sexual development, and in some cases of infertility
or multiple miscarriages.
The North-West Regional Cytogenetics Unit specializes in
high-resolution chromosome analysis and molecular diagnosis by
fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and quantitative
fluorescent PCR (QF-PCR).
The laboratory is staffed by state registered clinical
scientists who work in close association with in-house genetic
counsellors and clinical geneticists. We take pride in providing a
high quality service with accuracy and efficiency.
