Molecular Genetics is the study of the molecular structure and function of genes. The Molecular Genetics Laboratory at St Mary's Hospital Manchester provides DNA-based genetic testing for diagnosis and carrier detection for a number of diseases including cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and some inherited forms of cancer. Our investigative methods include directly sequencing the DNA from patients. This laboratory has been instrumental in the development and application of new DNA diagnostic tests; examples include neurofibromatosis type 2 (a rare type of cancer) and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (a hormonal imbalance). |

If a molecular genetic test is not available within the NW Regional Molecular Genetics Laboratory we can arrange sample processing and export for testing in an external laboratory. However the referral centre will be invoiced for the work. If this is required then please submit a completed export form with all relevant samples - please click on the link to download the form: Download Export Form |
