Professor Jill Clayton-Smith has been a consultant in clinical genetics since 1994. She qualified from Manchester University in 1982 and gained experience in adult medicine, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology prior to commencing training in clinical genetics in 1986. Special interests include dysmorphology, paediatric neurodevelopmental disorders, genetics of orofacial clefting and syndromic eye diseases. Professor Clayton-Smith is involved in teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and is involved in organising and mentoring for medical student option projects. She also organises educational meetings for clinical geneticists and paediatricians including the biennial Manchester Birth Defects Conference and the six-monthly Northern Genetics Forum. She has a role as Clinical Lead for research within the St Mary's Division and is a member of the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre Strategy Committee. Research interests include genetics of orofacial clefting and research into the long term effects of exposure to antiepileptic drugs in utero.
