John was trained at King's College, London and obtained his MRCP in 1997. He defended his DPhil at Oxford before moving to the north-west for specialist training in neurology. Appointed as consultant neurologist in 2005, he provided general neurology service to Fairfield General Hospital in addition to fulfilling the role of Director of the Manchester MND Care Centre. Since 2010, he combines the MND portfolio and general neurology at Salford Royal with the NCG-funded Specialist Neurofibromatosis Service at St Mary's Hospital, Manchester.
